Some activities are scary, especially things you’ve never done before. Networking with new people, pitching your idea in front of strangers or joining a trip with people you don’t know. It’s so easy to say no to opportunities, to spend your time on things inside your comfort zone. You will never know what you’re missing out on anyway.
How scary a new thing might be, the more exciting. You don’t know what’s on the other side of the door and what it will bring you. Maybe you meet the person you admire, or someone hands your dream opportunity. Or something small happens: going home being inspired and full of new ideas. Even if the activity wasn’t as good as planned, you always leave with a story to tell or new learnings.
If you put it that way, it sounds like there’s no downside of saying yes, but that’s not entirely true. You should always consider the opportunity cost. What do you need to give up to go to this activity? Is it worth it? You can make a pro and con list to find out if walking towards a new opportunity is worth giving up something else.
